MySQL database query logging can be enabled/disabled from command line. This will help in debugging database queries.

Enable database query logging

The following CLI command enabled database/mysql query log:

bin/magento dev:query-log:enable

Flush cache

bin/magento cache:flush

After that, browse your Magento site.
The database queries logs are saved in the file var/debug/db.log.

Note:
The database query log file size should be checked. The db.log file can take a lot of space as the file size goes on increasing based on the visit and activity on the Magento site.

By default, all the database queries are logged in the db.log file.
It will also include the call stack for the database query.

Only Log Slow MySQL Queries

This will log database queries that are slow or take more than a particular time duration (in seconds).

For example, if we want to log database queries that take more than 1.000 seconds then we can set it as follows:

This article shows how we can search Magento Repositories using SearchCriteriaBuilder that implements SearchCriteriaInterface. An example is provided of how we can perform search on Product repository in Magento. Similarly, we can search for other entities like Category, Customer, Order, Invoice, CMS Page, CMS Block, etc.

We can add different conditions to build custom search criteria.

Filters

Filter class is used to add custom field, value, and condition type to the search criteria.

$filter
    ->setField("name")

• condition_type is optional.
• If condition_type is not provided then the default condition_type is set as eq.

Different condition types:

CONDITION   NOTES
eq          Equals
gt          Greater than
gteq        Greater than or equal
lt          Less than
lteq        Less than or equal
moreq       More or equal
neq         Not equal
in          The value can contain a comma-separated list of values.
nin         Not in. The value can contain a comma-separated list of values.
like        The value can contain the SQL wildcard characters when like is specified.
nlike       Not like
notnull     Not null
null        Null
finset      A value within a set of values
nfinset     A value that is not within a set of values.
from        The beginning of a range. Must be used with to.
to          The end of a range. Must be used with from.

Filter Groups

FilterGroup class is used to apply multiple search criteria filters.

For OR condition: Pass filters array inside the FilterGroup class object.
For AND condition: Pass filterGroups array inside the searchCriteria class object.

The above code will generate the following conditions:

Sorting

SortOrder is used to apply sorting to the search criteria.

Field and Direction can be passed to the sortOrder object.

Field is the name of the field to sort.
Direction is how we would like to sort the result. The two sorting values are ASC and DESC.

Pagination

Limit the number in the result.

$searchCriteria->setPageSize(20); //retrieve 20 or less entities

Set the current page

The search engine determines the maximum number of results that a query can return.
For Elasticsearch, the default value of 10000 is defined in the module’s etc/di.xml file.

Search Items Using Filters

Below is an example of how we can search Product Repository using Search Criteria Builder.

The ProductRepositoryInterface class has the getList(SearchCriteria $searchCriteria) function which returns the search result object. The object is an instance of the class that implements the interface SearchResultInterface.

FilterBuilder and SearchCriteriaBuilder are used to avoid shared instances, i.e. we will be using create() method in the builder object so that Magento will instantiate a new object (unshared object).

This article shows how to get shopping cart items/products, subtotal and grand total of cart, and shipping and billing address entered while doing checkout in Magento 2.

I will be using both Dependency Injection (DI) and Object Manager in the below example code.

Using Object Manager

– Get products id, name, price, quantity, etc. present in your cart.
– Get number of items in cart and total quantity in cart.
– Get base total price and grand total price of items in cart.
– Get billing and shipping addresses entered during checkout.

Methods To Check If A Customer Is Logged-In In Magento 2

There are 2 ways you can check this. By injecting class and by using object manager. Although the 2nd method (object manager) is not recommended, it’s still used as an alternative.

Method 1: By Injecting Class (Dependency Injection)

In this method, first, you need to inject the following class in the constructor method:

You are using Composer 2, which some of your plugins seem to be incompatible with. Make sure you update your plugins or report a plugin-issue to ask them to support Composer 2.

Solution

Downgrade Composer to Version 1 

If for any reason you need to downgrade Composer to the latest version 1 release, you can do so by running the following command as root:

sudo composer self-update --1

Once the hold has been removed, then ServerPilot will eventually automatically update the composer package again. However, you can manually upgrade it to the latest version 2 release by running the following command as root:

sudo composer self-update --2

$cartId: You get the current quote Cart id, You can get the details of the active quote by cart id from the method.

$paymentMethod contains the Payment related information, Payment method, Payment additional data

The $billingAddress field contains the billing data of the checkout billing section.

You can create an after plugin also for the above method if you need to do some logic after the Payment method successfully saved.

We had a requirement to check if one of our modules is enabled or not as two of our modules were sharing the same attribute code. We wanted to make sure that we don’t try to create an attribute again if the other module already installed or enabled.

We have done this many times in Magento 1 by using the following code snippet -:

So we were wondering there must be a simple way of doing this in Magento 2 as well and yes we were not wrong. 1.1 Defining your module

Once you've set up Magento and entered it into the root Magento directory, go into app/code/local/. This will be where your module lives on the system. The first folder is your namespace, usually your company name. Then directory underneath this is your module name.

All your module folders will live underneath this module directory. We will create many here, but for starters just create the etc/ and controllers/ directories. We will also create a file called config.xml in this etc/ directory. This is the main, and incredibly important, the configuration file for your module.

Create this folder structure now. Your directory layout should look as follows:

[magentodir]/app/code/local/NAMESPACE/MODULENAME/etc/config.xml

[magentodir]/app/code/local/NAMESPACE/MODULENAME/controllers/

The content of config.xml should be as follows. It adds this module to the rest of the <modules> in the Magento system. And everything is in a module, even the 'core' Magento classes live within modules.

This config.xml specifies the full module name and a version number. The module name, NAMESPACE_MODULE, is derived from the aforementioned folder name. This is a very common pattern in Magento. Take note.

1.2 Declaring your controller 'routes'

But our module doesn't actually do anything currently. We need to add a 'route' going from a URL to a class we define. This will in turn actually do something. Alter your config.xml like so to add that route.

This modification we're adding to the <frontend> of the system (i.e. not the admin panel). And we're adding a router to the other <routers> in the system. We're giving that router a name, useful when dealing with layouts later on.

Then we say it <use>s the ‘standard’ frontend router system. Then it defines the important arguments (<args>): It’ll go to the <module> we’ve just defined. And it's all-important URL, called the <frontName>.

1.3 Defining the controller class

We’ll now define the PHP class that will be called via that route. Meaning, it will be called when the user goes to <magentourl>/URLNAME.

This will call a class in your controllers/ module directory. The default class that it will call is IndexController.php. And within that class the default method it will call will be indexAction(). All controller class methods called from the outside must have 'Action' suffixed to their name.

If you don’t use these defaults, you have to specify the controller name and action name after URLNAME i.e. [magentourl]/URLNAME/controllername/actionname, as opposed to just [magentourl]/URLNAME. [magentourl]/URLNAME/index/index is the same as just loading [magentourl]/URLNAME

Let’s create that controllers/IndexController.php class now. Its name must be prepended by the Namespace and Module name. All controllers must must have the word Controller at the end. (But you don’t need to use the word 'Controller' should you need to specify the controller in the url.)

The will extend Mage_Core_Controller_Front_Action to allow it to work as a controller and to give it access to various methods and properties of the system.

Generally, Magento session is handled by core Module ‘core/session’. We use “set<session name>” to set a session variable. For more understanding, look on to the following syntax and example.

Let’s now look, how to get value from the session variable “MyValue”.  To retrieve the  session variable, we use

Solution 1:

A quick solution for the memory limit in Magento 2 command is to directly add the memory limit inside the command.

For the Compilation command,

php -dmemory_limit=5G bin/magento setup:di:compile

For Deployment

php -dmemory_limit=5G bin/magento setup:static-content:deploy

You can change as per 5G to max if the issue is not resolved.

Solution 2:

If you are using PHP >= 5.3.0 and you used the Magento 2.1.x and above, then after you run composer install, two files will be created in your root directory and your pub directory named .user.ini

Edit those files to override your PHP.ini settings, in this case is the memory_limit

; Set PHP memory limit to 768M which already enough for compilation tasks 
memory_limit = 768M 
max_execution_time = 18000

If you are using Apache, you will need to care the files inside the root directory only, not the /pub one and vice versa if you are using engineX (nginx)

Magento e-commerce has a standard newsletter function that is useful if you get it to work. This post will highlight the major reasons why your newsletter is not sent to your customers.

1. Magento schedules and sends the newsletters using a cronjob script called “cron.php” in your Magento installation root folder. To schedule this cronjob you need to access your web server using SSH (You can use for example Putty). For more information see the Magento wiki.
2. If you don’t want to schedule the cronjob you need to go twice to the cron.php file in your browser e.g. www.yoursite.com/cron.php every time you want to send your newsletter. The first time it will schedule the newsletter and the second time it will send it.
3. After login with ssh type: crontab -e This will open an editor. The contents may be empty if you have never set up crontabs for the current user.
4. To schedule the cronjob every 5 minutes you should enter: */5 * * * * php /absolute/path/to/magento/cron.php
5. Save and close
6. Now you can create a newsletter template at Newsletter / Newsletter Templates.

7. After creating and saving the template you can schedule it by selecting “Queue Newsletter” in the Action pull-down.

8. Select a date and time at “Queue Date Start” when you want to start sending your newsletter.
9. If you have multiple store views make sure you select at least one store view at “Subscribers From” otherwise you will have no recipients.

Following steps to Configure robots.txt in Magento 2

First let’s look at model and collection architecture in magento. If you look at a magento model class it extends Mage_Core_Model_Abstract which intern extends Varien_Object.The class Mage_Core_Model_Abstract has function like getId(), load(), save(), delete() etc .

Mysql4 resource files, as I mentioned earlier are used to perform database queries on tables. Below will list how we do sql operations inside resource files.

SELECT QUERY

Suppose we have the file Excellence_Test_Model_Mysql4_Test resource file.

In this file there are many new functions which have been used. Let’s take them one by one.

In our model file, we have used this function

$id = $this->getResource()->loadByField($field,$value);

$this->getResource() function returns the resource model’s object. So we are simply calling the loadyByField($field,$value) function in the resource model.

getTable() function

Now in our Mysql4 file, in the loadByField() function we have used $table = $this->getMainTable(); .This function returns the table name of the current model, i.e the one defined in the class’s constructor. If you want to get table name of another sql table in magento, we need to the getTable() call e.g

$table = $this->getTable(‘newsletter/subscribe’);

_getReadAdapter() function

Next we have: $where = $this->_getReadAdapter()->quoteInto(“$field = ?”, $value);

Here the first function too see is the $this->_getReadAdapter() function. This function return an object which has function to perform database query, like fetch(), fetchAll(), query(), etc.

Next, in read adapter, we can perform operations like:

1. fetchAll() : returns entire database table in multiple dimensional array as per the select query. e.g if we are executing an sql like “select * from table_name”, we would use the fetchAll() function to get all the values.
2. fetchRow(): returns a single row of the database table as per the select query. e.g if we are executing sql like “select * from table where id = ’1′” would use fetchRow() to get the single row.
3. fetchCol(): returns single column of a database table as per the select query. e.g if query is a select name from table” we would use fetchCol() function.
4. fetchOne(): return since value, i.e single row and single column. e.g if sql query “select count(*) from table” then we would use fetchOne()

The read adapter has many other functions as well, but above are the important functions used.

_quoteInfo() function

Another function we have used is quoteInto(): This function is used to create our where conditions. In this the actual value is substituted into the question mark we have written. For e.g $this->_getReadAdapter()->quoteInto(“user_id = ?”, 3); translates to

“user_id = 3″. Another frequently used variation of quoteInfo() is

$where = $this->_getReadAdapter()->quoteInto("$field IN(?)", array(1,2,3));

this translates to “field in (1,2,3)”

Getting deeper into the quoteInto() function: If we have multiple where conditions we can use

$where = $this->_getReadAdapter()->quoteInto("$field = ? AND ", $value).$this->_getReadAdapter()->quoteInto("$field1 = ? OR ", $value1).$this->_getReadAdapter()->quoteInto("$field2 = ?", $value2);

So this way, we can have multiple where conditions.

Continuing on the loadByField function in our resource model, next we have

$select = $this->_getReadAdapter()->select()->from($table,array(‘test_id’))->where($where);

Here we have created the select query using the select(), and on that called the from() function.

from() function

The from() function takes many different parameters, if you want to fire a simple select * query, you need to only pass the table name like from($table).

But right now, I wanted to select just a single column that is test_id, so I passed an array with column name to select. i.e array(‘test_id’). If we want to select multiple column, we need to array(‘test_id’,’col1’,’col2’). This will create a sql like

“select test_id,col1,col2 from $table”. But support we want a sql query like

“select test_id as id,col1 as column1 from $table” , i would call

from($table,array('id'=>'test_id','column1'=>'col1'));

Note:

If you want to see the exact sql that is generated by your function, you can any time do this

Again, back to the loadByField() function. The last line

This is already explained, above.

The select() function we used above return a select object which provides us with many more functions to perform all operations on a sql query. The class for the select object is Varien_Db_Select, where you can look into more details for all functions. Let look at a sample php code below.

As we can see all function in the select object, return the select object itself. Due to this we are able to chain the functions.

In this example, I have used almost all the sql select parameters you might require expect joins, which will be covered later.

Let’s take each function one at a time.

1. select() : used to initialize the sql query. This returns the Select object, which is the object on which we do all our operations.
2. from(): table name on which select operation is done. we have seen this in detail above.
3. columns() : here we can specify exactly which columns to select in the query
4. where() : used to give the where condition
5. limit(): takes to parameters. First are how many rows to return and second is offset from where to start. So in current case, it means return 10rows, leaving first 5rows.this uses the LIMIT 10 OFFSET 5 syntax in sql query, rather than LIMIT 10,5
6. order(): you can set how you want to order the result set. Default is ascending order. But if you want to mentioned descending order you do order(array(‘created_time Zend_Db_Select::SQL_DESC))
7. group(): put group by clause in your select query in the specified field.Having(): put having condition for group by clause.

JOINS

Let look at sample function.

So, here you can see clearly how to use joins. I don’t think much explanation is required, the function call are self-explanatory. We can also use joinCross, joinFull, joinNatural as well, if you require it in any query. Please look at Varien_Db_Select class for details.

COUNT,MAX

Again, lets take another sample code

As you can see here, using Expr classes, we do mysql averaging functions.

query() function

In the end, if you have a very complex sql query, you want to execute you can simple use the query function.

For delete query, it’s very simple

Important Note: Its considered good practice in magento, to execute these sql query in the resource files only. You can get the read adaptor object in model, phtml or any other files and do the above operations in any file. But as good practices, always try to do the query in resource/mysql4 files only.

Integrity constraint violation: 1062 Duplicate entry ‘4-Images’ for key ‘EAV_ATTRIBUTE_GROUP_ATTRIBUTE_SET_ID_ATTRIBUTE_GROUP_NAME’, query was: UPDATE `eav_attribute_group` SET `attribute_group_name` = ? WHERE (`attribute_group_id`=10)

This particular error presented itself while upgrading from Magento 2.0.2 to Magento 2.1.x and stops the upgrade process. We’ve discovered the issue is related to old data from the previous Magento 1.9.x installation. In order to over come this error, you’ll need to delete a row from the database.

Run the following MySQL query to find and delete the offending attribute.

delete from eav_attribute_group WHERE attribute_group_name = 'Images';

After that then you can attempt to run the upgrade command again and the issue should be resolved.

This script quickly adds a Magento Admin user directly into the database. It is possible to run this script from the command line or by copying and pasting into phpMyAdmin. Just make sure to edit the following fields with your personalized data and import. Most of these fields are trivial, I’m just listing them so you don’t miss anything.

1. Set the salt portion of your password. You’ll rarely need to change this. If you do, just use two lower case letters of your choice.
2. Set your password. At least 8 characters in length and at least one digit.
3. Firstname: Enter admin’s first name.
4. Lastname: Enter admin’s last name.
5. Enter email of admin user.
6. Enter username where ‘myuser’ is set. Notice ‘myuser’ shows up in two places.
7. Enter Firstname again. This is more symbolic to label the rule.

Today I was achieve to get all orders for a customer based on the customer email address.. While there are almost certainly several ways to do this, I found a nice query that is quick, and capable.

I have a downloadable product. After I order the product and when my order is complete, I am able to download the product links from ‘My Downloadable Products’ menu in Customer Account section.

I go to ‘My Downloadable Products’ section and I click on the links to download. However, the PDF file opens in the browser itself. I would like to have the feature that asks to download / save as instead of directly opening in the browser.

It is fine with ZIP files. It asks to download and save. However, the PDF files, Images, HTML files, etc. are directly opened in the browser. I want them to download and save. So, a window appearing and asking to save and download the file is what I want.

Solution:

There is a very easy solution to this.

By default, Magento has the Configuration settings to make those files open in the browser itself. You can adjust the configuration settings in Magento Admin to ask for download files instead of opening in the browser.

- Go to System -> Configuration -> Catalog -> Downloadable Product Options -> Use Content Disposition
- Change the setting from inline to attachment.

Now, whenever you click the downloadable link, a pop window will always open and ask to download or open the file.

Some people ask about the difference between

Mage::getModel() and Mage::getSingleton()

in Magento. Here is the difference between these two:

Mage::getModel('module/model')

will create a new instance of the model object (if such object exists in configuration)
So if we write:

Mage::getModel('catalog/product'),

it will create new instance of the object product each time. So,

$p1 = Mage::getModel('catalog/product');
$p2 = Mage::getModel('catalog/product');

Then $p1 is a one instance of product and $p2 is another instance of product.

While Mage::getSingleton('catalog/product') will create reference on existing object (if object does not exist then this method will create an instance using ::getModel() and returns reference to it).
So, if

$p1 = Mage::getSingleton('catalog/product');
$p2 = Mage::getSingleton('catalog/product');

Then $p1 and $p2 both refer to the same instance of product as reference $p2.
